WriteGuide.com is an individualized, online, writing tutorial service. Student may enroll for one month to twelve months. The primary audience for WriteGuide.com is students in grades four through twelve, but younger students as well as adults may also enroll. The base price is $75 per month, with savings breaks at three-month and twelve-month enrollments. Twelve months is $800. You might have more than one sibling share an enrollment, but it depends how much interaction each one needs whether or not this will work. A subscription entitles you to one parent and one student email and response per day (five business days per week). The teacher will interact with only one student each day, so a single WriteGuide.com enrollment probably works best with a single student. Note that all communication takes place through a password-protected web portal instead of regular email to maintain security and privacy. However, parents have an account where they can monitor all interaction between their student and teacher.
Teachers are very knowledgeable with masters degrees in fields related to English. All of them also have teaching experience and are published authors. Photos and biographies of the teachers are available on the website, and you can request a particular instructor if you wish.
Teachers can assist the student with assignments they already have from other courses, or they can create individually tailored assignments for the student. For example, one student needed to write a literary analysis paper for another class she was taking. She was given a number of books from which she had to choose two for a comparison. The teacher was familiar with all of the books and was able to assist the student as she worked out which books would be most inspiring and practical for the assignment. The teacher went on to help her work through the structure, theme, and ideas as she wrote her paper.
Whatever stage a student is at, the teacher will work with him or her to develop and sharpen writing skills. Working through a single assignment for a month might be enough for some students, while others might benefit from daily assistance through the school year. Much depends also on what parents need. Parents, some busy with multiple children, might not have the time or the knowledge to assist their children as the WriteGuide teachers are able to do. Generally teachers give detailed feedback, but do not grade assignments. However, they will grade assignments if that is requested.
An “Introduction to Grammar” course is available for students ages 12 and up who are weak on grammar. This three-month course is more structured than the writing tutorials. Cost is $210.00.
WriteGuide.com has been in business since 1998. They were one of the first companies to provide this type of service to homeschoolers. These innovative folks have tackled another project, The Homeschool Literary Quarterly. This online magazine will feature works by homeschool students. The first issue is slated for December 2010. This should be an excellent outlet for our many talented young writers. Check the website for submission guidelines: www.homeschoolliterary.com.
