Do you have a beginning writer who needs to learn to form all of their letters? Do your children need practice on forming some letters, but not enough to justify purchasing a complete handwriting program? Would you like your children to practice penmanship by copying particular Bible verses or literary passages? Would you like to create pages with penmanship lines on only one half so your children can draw on the other half?
Sheri Graham has created super-flexible e-books that you can use for all these purposes and more, although they are only available for printing thus far; I assume she will be producing similar books for cursive in the future. You can choose a book that supports whichever style of printing you prefer: A Beka’s ball-and-stick, BJU Press’s slant print, D’Nealian’s slant print, Palmer Method’s modified ball-and-stick, or Benson Slant Font which is very similar to the Getty-Dubay Italic style.
These ebooks come as editable PDFs, so you can (and need to) type on the student pages before printing. Each book has suggestions for use and simple instructions for creating the editable pages, including how to create “blank” lines for practice space.
Each book is divided into six sections with each section set to print a different “font.” The six choices are Outline with arrows (showing how to form the letters), Outline without arrows, Dots with arrows, Dots without arrows, Black letters, and Gray letters. You should choose the style depending upon the child’s skill level. There are 26 blank pages in each section, so if you prefer to create a page for each letter of the alphabet for practice in any one of the six sections, you can create and print pages all at once. You can also create and save the pages for future use.
As I mentioned, the pages are blank, so it is entirely up to you to decide what practice a student needs. You might create an entire row of dotted-line letters for a beginner to trace or you might create a line with only a single, blackline model of a letter or word for a student to copy. You might let a student use the lined pages for other writing practice without inputting any text of your own.
There are no decorations or borders on the pages, and they are not designed for users to add their own graphics via the computer, so any “decoration” must be done by the student by hand.
This is a super idea that really offers something unique with the editable PDF format.
