American Adventures, True Stories from America’s Past

In each of these two books, fifteen high-interest stories from American history are used for special, self-contained lessons or to supplement a comprehensive history study. Johnny Appleseed, the Orphan Train, and the Camels of the Old West are three of the topics in Part 1, and Theodore Roosevelt, John Ponzi (of the infamous "Ponzi Scheme"), and Rosa Parks are three topics featured in Part 2. Stories are short—about three pages, followed by activities. Activities are grouped into three areas: writing/journal (short writing activities, vocabulary exercises), discussion (good discussion questions and thought-provoking challenges to defend both sides of an issue), and cooperative group (further research and presentation). A timeline and short summary of "What Else Was Happening?" put each story in focus. The books were not written for Christian audiences, so don't expect to hear the "whole story" such as Johnny Appleseed and his gospel preaching. You'll also have to deal with such "perspective" problems as an exercise that asks students to identify "four most important qualities you think a U.S. President should have" from only these eight traits: intelligent, experienced, inspiring, logical, reasonable, caring, healthy, and energetic. Suggested for ages 10 to 15.
