Fraction Mania Game
Fraction Mania is a very professionally designed game that offers four game variations to suit different skill levels. Brightly colored planets are made up of fractional "pie" shapes, with the identifying fraction appearing on only one side. In three of the games, children try to complete their planets by rolling a fraction die and collecting the various pieces they need.
Within the game, "Beginner's Mania" helps children become familiar with fractions. "Fraction Mania," the second game in difficulty, requires children to "trade up," working on fraction equivalencies. Game cards are also used which add a random element to play. "Double Mania" becomes even more challenging with another set of game cards and the addition of a whole number die. Children multiply the whole number and fraction dice to determine the total of the fraction pieces they collect. This requires significant work with conversions. The last game, played with the Spacelog tablet and fraction die requires children to do much of the same type fraction converting, but without the fraction pieces. I suspect that creative families will come up with their own additional variations on how to play with Fraction Mania.
Hint: If you are careful not to lose them, you can also use the fraction pieces as manipulatives as you cover lessons from your math program.
