Now in second editions, the readers in this series offer appealing combinations of reading and science. Large print with two-color line drawings make the books easy-to-read with some graphic interest. We get excellent reading material and a "science text" in each little book. The "science," rather than being dry, is very entertaining and interesting, and it is likely to encourage children to be more observant of animal life.

Spiders, insects, birds, and animals are themes for reading selections in Book 1. Book 2 features crabs and other marine life, bees, wasps, worms, and spiders. In Book 3, children learn about ants, flies, beetles, barnacles, jellyfish, sea stars. and dragonflies.

Book 4 is an excellent example of the type of real book Charlotte Mason would recommend. It is good for all ages, so please do not limit it to your fourth grader. It is informative, practical, and well written rather than "textbookish." Topics include, poison ivy, many varieties of birds and insects, toads, bats, beavers, turtles, snakes, and the stars. Questions and both indoor and outdoor activities follow each chapter. Black-and-white illustrations and a glossary are helpful extras.

In Book 5, reading topics are the human body and animals. Questions are included. The reading level is not very difficult, although the content directs it toward older children.
