Reading Between the Lines helps you sort through the different factors relating to Christian faith, literary value, and enjoyment when choosing reading material. Veith, a university instructor, loves literature, and because of this he promotes guidelines some of us might feel are too liberal. However, as you read this book, you will probably do some rethinking about your view of literature. Even with the area of fantasy, which seems to be one of the biggest problem areas, Veith does an excellent job of explaining how to differentiate between that which is worthwhile and that which is not.

For those with a poor literary background, this book provides an excellent mini-course in literature. Veith piques your interest by quoting from various authors and whetting your appetite for "the whole story." You are likely to find yourself making a list of books you need to read. Some readers might feel overwhelmed if you try to read this entire book straight through. I recommend taking a leisurely approach, reading those sections that are most pertinent to your concerns first then others as you find the time or need.
