Shakespeare Interdisciplinary Unit

Create unit studies for junior or senior high students based upon Shakespeare's plays Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, or Richard III.

An introductory section covers general topics such as the author, the world of Shakespeare, the theater, Elizabethan times and clothing, and the history of the English language. Next are sections devoted to each of the three plays. Each of these sections includes lesson plans that concentrate primarily on language arts activities. Following these sections are suggestions for extending any of the unit studies into math, science, social studies, arts and crafts, and life skills.

The book was written for classroom use, so some adaptation is needed for homeschoolers. It would be most useful if you have a small group of students who can do activities together and act out parts of the plays. There are some content problems that you will probably need to work around. For example, astrology is treated as a harmless belief, and witchcraft is treated as a form of discrimination. I was also bothered by the historical inaccuracy of describing King James I as a religious man, supposedly, because he instigated the production of the King James Version of the Bible. Problems aside, there are many useful activities, reproducible work pages, and fun ideas for exploring Shakespeare.
