The World’s Greatest
Catholic Literature

Secular world literature texts tend to give short shrift to literature that has a clearly Christian frame of reference, and Protestant literature texts skim lightly over the first 1500 years of church history, as if most significant writing was on hiatus between the time of the completion of the New Testament writings and the Protestant Reformation. This book fills that gap by providing selections divided under seven different time periods, sometimes identified by key "ideas": early church, middle ages, early renaissance, religious humanism, an expanding faith, the nineteenth century and after, and modern creative and critical writing. All selections have something to do with events, ideas, or people relating to Christianity.

Among the selected authors are St. Ignatius, St. Polycarp, Tertullian, St. Benedict, St. Bernard, Peter the Venerable, King Alfred, Venerable Bede, Roger Bacon, St. Thomas Aquinas, Girolamo Savonarola, St. Thomas More, John Gerson, Thomas BKempis, Anthony Munday, St. Francis de Sales, John Dryden, John Henry Newman, P.A. Sheehan, Pope Pius XI, Orestes A. Brownson, Lord Acton, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Gerald Manley Hopkins, and G.K. Chesterton. No living authors were included, even at the original time of publication in 1942. Most selections are short in length, with the longest being about eight pages. I suggest using this book as an adjunct to other literature courses or world history studies.
