Phonics/reading, writing, math, and Bible are foundational subjects in this "almost complete" kindergarten program. Brief suggestions and activities are given for science, history, health and safety, and fine arts. You might want to supplement these areas with other resources and activities.
Reading begins with letter and sound recognition. Phonics is taught with consonant-vowel combinations first (ba, be, bi, bo, bu), then word families. 8 1/2" by 11" cards for key words/letters, numbers, some phonogram blends, and alphabetical Scripture verses come packaged with the program.
Phonics covers both long and short vowel words as well as sight words that enable students to read beginning McGuffey's Eclectic Primer and the Beginner's Champion Phonics Reader that accompany the program. Math introduces numbers and continues up through addition up to sums of 10; counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's; telling time; and money recognition. Handwriting and spelling skills are also stressed.
This program is more academic than many, and about equivalent to A Beka's kindergarten program. There are a few hands-on activities such as working with flash cards and counting pennies.
Daily lesson plans, presented in one volume, give you step-by-step instructions, including what to say. Although written for the classroom, the curriculum can easily be adapted for homeschools. The kindergarten program is packaged into two kits: one for teacher or parent and the other for the student. The first package includes teacher manual with lesson plans, the two readers, flashcards mentioned above, and a 1 to 100 Numbers Chart. The student kit includes copies of the two readers, Letters and Numbers Pads (3 separate pads that total 389 pages), a Letters Writing Tablet, Numbers Writing Tablet (these last two tablets are each about 1 inch thick), a K5 report card, a K5 diploma, chart for Bible memory verse records, and small numbers flash cards. You need a separate student kit for each student, but only one teacher's kit.
